Preventing Corporal Punishment

Preventing Corporal Punishment

Preventing Corporal Punishment
Overview

Corporal punishment—any physical force used to discipline a learner—is illegal in South African schools.
Learners have the right to safety, dignity, and respect.

Preventative Measures:
✅ Know your rights—educators may not use physical punishment.
✅ Report any incidents to a trusted adult or authority.
✅ Seek emotional and practical support from parents or counsellors.

Key Message:

“Discipline should teach, not harm.”
Respect and communication are the best tools for discipline.

Finding Better Ways

"Hi, I’m Sipho, and I go to school in Khayelitsha. Last week, a learner made a mistake in class, and the teacher seemed angry. I remembered our school lesson on positive discipline and how teachers can guide us without hitting.

The teacher instead asked the learner to explain what happened and helped them fix it. I felt relieved, and I saw that we can learn from our mistakes safely—without fear of punishment."
