Preventing Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
Overview

Gender-Based Violence (GBV) includes any act of physical, emotional, or sexual harm based on gender or gender identity.

Preventative Measures:
✅ Join or organize awareness campaigns and discussions.
✅ Support survivors—listen, believe, and offer help.
✅ Challenge harmful gender stereotypes (e.g., “boys don’t cry,” “girls are weak”).
✅ Promote equality and respect in classrooms and activities.

Key Message:

“Equality begins with respect.”
Schools must be safe for all learners, regardless of gender identity.

Respect Starts With Me

"Hi, I’m Thandi, and I go to school in Durban. During break, I overheard some boys making sexist jokes about girls in our class. I remembered our Life Skills lesson on respect and equality, so I spoke up and told them their words were not okay.

My friends supported me, and we started a small campaign in our class about treating everyone with respect. I realized that preventing GBV starts with noticing bad behavior and taking action safely."
