Preventing Homophobia

Preventing Homophobia
Overview

Homophobia is prejudice or hostility toward people based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
It can lead to bullying, isolation, and emotional harm.

Preventative Measures:
✅ Educate yourself about LGBTQ+ issues and experiences.
✅ Show respect to everyone—diversity strengthens communities.
✅ Be an ally: support LGBTQ+ learners and speak up against discrimination.

Key Message:

“Everyone deserves safety and respect—no exceptions.”
Inclusive schools are peaceful schools.

Being an Ally

"Hi, I’m Thabo, and I go to school in Cape Town. During lunch, I noticed a group teasing a classmate about their gender expression. I remembered a school diversity campaign we saw on posters around the school about inclusion and respect.

I went over, invited my classmate to join our table, and calmly told the others that teasing isn’t okay. Later, more learners joined us, and our classmate felt welcome and safe."
